KDP EPUB calculator for Kindle delivery fees

A KDP EPUB calculator estimates the Kindle royalty left after the delivery fee. Enter the marketplace, list price, EPUB size, VAT, and the 70% or 35% option. The 70% payout is 70% of the VAT-exclusive price minus delivery. The 35% payout does not subtract that fee. File size is rounded up to the next kilobyte, and a very small file still has the marketplace minimum charge when 70% applies.

Last updated: . Rates were checked on 2026-10-08 against Digital Book Pricing (G200634500) and eBook List Price Requirements (G200634560).

What is Amazon’s $1.29 example?

Amazon’s published US promotional example uses a $5.99 list price, a $1.99 countdown price, a 1 MB file, and a $0.15 delivery rate. The KDP EPUB calculator returns $1.29 when VAT is $0. The calculation is 0.70 × ($1.99 − $0.15). At 20% VAT, Amazon first rounds the tax to $0.33. The royalty is then $1.06, from 0.70 × ($1.99 − $0.33 − $0.15).

What does the Amazon.de example return?

The KDP EPUB calculator returns €1.87 for an Amazon.de book at €2.99, 7% VAT, and 1 MB. VAT is €0.20 and delivery is €0.12. The calculation is 0.70 × (€2.99 − €0.20 − €0.12).

When does $1.99 earn 35% instead?

A regular Amazon.com list price of $1.99 is below the $2.99 minimum for 70%. The royalty is $0.70, which is 35% of $1.99, and Amazon does not deduct the delivery fee. A $1.99 countdown can still earn $1.29 when the regular list price is $5.99, because eligibility follows the regular price. The KDP EPUB calculator returns 35% for that regular price. It returns 70% only when the regular price is inside the band.

Delivery rates in this KDP EPUB calculator

This KDP EPUB calculator uses one delivery rate and one 70% list-price band for each marketplace below. The file is rounded up to the next kilobyte before the per-megabyte rate is applied.

What this KDP EPUB calculator checks

Delivery fee from the EPUB size

Each marketplace has its own per-megabyte rate. The KDP EPUB calculator rounds the file up to the next kilobyte, converts it back to megabytes, and then holds it to the currency minimum.

70% price band by marketplace

Amazon.com currently qualifies from $2.99 to $12.99. The table above lists the published minimum and maximum for every other store.

VAT before the royalty rate

Enter the VAT rate included in the customer price. The deducted tax is rounded to the currency’s normal minor unit, matching Amazon’s $0.33 treatment in the 20% example.

Print-price and KDP Select gates

The 70% option also requires the eBook list price to be at least 20% below a physical edition on Amazon. Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and India need KDP Select as well.

Those checks are the reason to use a KDP EPUB calculator instead of a print-only royalty formula. Delivery, VAT, and the price band change the amount you keep even when the headline rate stays at 70%.

The KDP EPUB calculator is for the Kindle file only. It does not turn a word count into a file size, and it does not price a print book. Paperback and hardcover royalties, including printing cost, stay on the KDP Royalty Calculator.

How to use the KDP EPUB calculator

  1. Choose the Amazon marketplace. Delivery rates and 70% bands are not interchangeable across currencies.
  2. Enter the regular list price. Add a promotional price only when you are testing a countdown. Eligibility still follows the regular price.
  3. Enter the EPUB file size in megabytes and any VAT included in the customer price. A KDP EPUB calculator rounds the file up to the next kilobyte before it multiplies the delivery rate.
  4. Add the print list price if a paperback or hardcover is already on Amazon, and confirm KDP Select where that store requires it.
  5. Compare the applied royalty with the other option. A large delivery fee can make 35% pay more than 70% on the same list price.

When 70% is worth more than 35%

On Amazon.com, the KDP EPUB calculator shows that 35% of a $4.99 list price is $1.75, and that option does not deduct a delivery fee. A file under 1 MB costs at most $0.15 at the US 70% rate. A 16 MB file priced at $2.99 earns $0.41 at 70% and $1.05 at 35%.

Use the exported EPUB size. A draft folder that still contains unused images is larger than the file KDP measures. The KDP EPUB calculator should be run again after you compress and export the final file.

Three pricing jobs this tool covers

Use the KDP EPUB calculator when the next decision depends on file size, not just the sticker price.

A text novel with a small file

Most novels land well under 3 MB. Check that the list price sits inside the 70% band. On Amazon.com, a file under 1 MB adds at most $0.15 at the 70% rate. The KDP EPUB calculator reports royalty per sale, not the headline 70%.

A countdown below the usual band

Enter the regular price and the promotional price separately. The KDP EPUB calculator keeps 70% on a $1.99 countdown when the Amazon.com list price is $5.99, which is Amazon’s own example.

An illustrated or fixed-layout EPUB

Compress images, export again, and remeasure. If the file is large enough that 35% pays more, keep that option until the file gets smaller. Japan waives delivery at 10 MB or more. Run the KDP EPUB calculator on the exported file.

What this estimate leaves out

A KDP EPUB calculator is a planning figure for one Kindle sale. It does not replace the pricing screen in your KDP account.

  • Kindle Unlimited page reads are not part of this per-sale royalty.
  • Taxes withheld from the KDP account are not deducted here.
  • Refunds are not deducted from the estimate.
  • Advertising cost is not deducted from the estimate.
  • Currency conversion into a bank deposit is not included.
  • The KDP EPUB calculator does not convert page count into an EPUB file size. Export the EPUB and use the size KDP measures.
  • Public-domain titles and some price-match sales follow extra rules on Amazon’s pricing page.

The 70% bands used here, including $2.99–$12.99 on Amazon.com, follow the list-price table effective July 7, 2026. Amazon can change a threshold without notice. Confirm the result in the eBook pricing step before you publish.

KDP EPUB calculator questions

Does the 35% option deduct a Kindle delivery fee?

No. Amazon deducts a Kindle delivery fee only when the 70% option applies. The 35% royalty is the VAT-exclusive list price multiplied by 0.35. A KDP EPUB calculator still shows the fee so you can compare both options.

Why does a 1 MB file not always cost one delivery unit?

KDP rounds the EPUB up to the next kilobyte before multiplying by the marketplace delivery rate. A file of 1.0001 MB becomes 1,025 KB. The KDP EPUB calculator uses that rounded size, and every marketplace also has a minimum delivery charge when the 70% option applies.

Can a countdown price below $2.99 still earn 70%?

Yes, when the regular Amazon.com list price is from $2.99 to $12.99. Amazon’s example uses a $5.99 list price and a $1.99 promotional price on a 1 MB file. With no VAT, the royalty is $1.29. The KDP EPUB calculator checks the regular list price for eligibility and the promotional price for the payout.

What happens if a Kindle price is outside the 70% band?

The Kindle sale earns 35%, and Amazon does not deduct the delivery fee. On Amazon.com the 70% band is $2.99–$12.99 as of July 7, 2026. The KDP EPUB calculator shows $0.70 for a regular $1.99 list price, not the $1.29 promotional result.

Do Brazil, Japan, Mexico, and India always pay 70%?

No. Amazon.com.br, Amazon.co.jp, Amazon.com.mx, and Amazon.in pay 70% only when the eBook is enrolled in KDP Select and the list price is inside that store’s 70% band. The KDP EPUB calculator uses 35% until that enrollment is confirmed.

Finish the listing around the same book

Use the KDP EPUB calculator result, then finish the same book with these four steps.

  1. Estimate formatted length with the Word Count to Page Calculator.
  2. Build the Kindle cover in the eBook Cover Generator.
  3. Size a print wrap in the KDP Cover Size Calculator if you also sell paperback.
  4. Draft the retail copy with the Amazon Book Description Generator.

Check the delivery fee on your EPUB

Return to the KDP EPUB calculator and test list price, file size, and VAT before you choose 70% or 35%.
